Teaching Children Meditation

Teaching Children Meditation

2015-10-15 21.31.32Last week I was invited to talk to two groups of primary school children in a Cardiff school. They were studying ‘Happiness’ and were also looking at what possible career options were available to them.

The children were years 1 and 2 so a bundle of wonderful excitement and energy wrapped in the bodies of 5 and 6 year olds! When I arrived, I took the youngest class first and was instantly amazed at how any teacher can possibly keep these balls of energy sat in a circle for more than a minute or two. Whilst every child was incredibly well behaved, they were, quite rightly, buzzing with excitement and as I looked to the left side of the circle to ask them to try and be quiet and sit still, the right side of the circle began wriggling and giggling. It was like trying to spin 30 plates! Whilst I have so much admiration for the teachers who do this day in day out, it did also make me wonder whether conventional school rooms are totally outdated for children this young?

3 Ways Meditation Changed my Life

3 Ways Meditation Changed my Life

2015-05-24 13.31.32Five years or so ago, I had never knowingly meditated in my life, I was stressed, anxious, unwell and unhappy. I felt as though my life had spiraled out of all control and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted nor who I was. As I looked around my life, I knew I had actively participated in every single part of it’s creation, the people I had chosen to be with, the house I so happily purchased, the qualifications I had worked so hard for. I had certainly taken part in every aspect of it and yet I felt as though it had all just appeared one day and I was completely disconnected from it.

Losing Friends

Losing Friends

It seems one of the biggest challenges can be that we often lose people along the way on this journey and it is hurtful and hard to understand.

Surely we begin following a spiritual path and we become better people, don’t we? Nicer people to be around? Kinder? More compassionate and understanding? More enlightened? More tolerant?

Forgiveness

Forgiveness

Picture1It is clearly apparent to me that many of the reasons we are sad, depressed, anxious, unhappy and unhealthy often come down to us refusing to let go of a past hurt.

Throughout our lives we experience disappointment, betrayal, hurt and pain from others. Whether a minor annoyance from an irritating colleague or full on repeated pain or abuse from a loved one, we all know how deeply emotional pain can scar us. However, we do not all realise that it is entirely up to us to allow that scar to heal or to keep picking at the scab and cause even greater pain.

It has seemed apparent to me that the greatest way to progress through your life on a path of emotional, physical and spiritual wellness involves a key trait, a trait that I had previously struggled with, forgiveness.

Mind over Cancer

Mind over Cancer

I am honoured to offer you yet another guest blog this week. Wendy is one of the most positive people I have ever met and embraces life with both hands. Few people would ever guess that she has been on an incredibly tough journey fighting breast cancer.

Cancer is a disease which strikes fear in all our hearts and most of us, if not affected directly buy it, have been affected indirectly by it. Wendy is a wonderful example of how a combination of excellent medical intervention, positive thinking and holistic therapies can have a very positive impact upon beating the disease. Wendy explains her journey:

Magical Space

Magical Space

It is so important that we have places where we can completely relax and be at peace, places where we can sit, reflect, meditate and allow ourselves to be still. So often we spend much of our lives rushing from home, to our car, to work, to our car, to home and it goes on and on!

Whilst it is ideal if our homes are our sanctuaries, if you live with other people, you may find that the whole house is not a place where you can relax. Maybe you have one of those back bedrooms piled high with ironing, maybe your child’s bedroom should come with hazard tape or maybe you’ve inherited an avocado bathroom suite with clashing orange tiles in your home and are not in a position to replace it yet.

Wishing Peace

Wishing Peace

Have you ever been hurt or betrayed by someone you cared about? Has someone ever let you down or disappointed you? Of course you have! Part of learning some really valuable lessons in this life involve us learning how to interact with others, how to build relationships and who to build them with. Inevitably, this means we sometimes make choices which do not end well.

Despite this happening to each and every one of us at some point in our lives, some people carry so much pain, hurt or anger for those who have done them wrong that an event that may have happened long ago in their past, is still greatly impacting their present.
