Five years or so ago, I had never knowingly meditated in my life, I was stressed, anxious, unwell and unhappy. I felt as though my life had spiraled out of all control and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted nor who I was. As I looked around my life, I knew I had actively participated in every single part of it’s creation, the people I had chosen to be with, the house I so happily purchased, the qualifications I had worked so hard for. I had certainly taken part in every aspect of it and yet I felt as though it had all just appeared one day and I was completely disconnected from it.
It was in those early days of becoming aware of my discomfort with my life, that I began unknowingly meditating. My location of choice was my bath, where I would lay in the dark and just focus upon my breathing. Hours would pass, my skin would wrinkle, but I felt as though I had only been there minutes.
Since those days, my life has become unrecognisable to what it once was. I am a consistently happy and healthy person, I have genuine love and gratitude for every person and every thing remaining in my life, although the amazing thing is, I now have far less than I did before.
Meditation is an integral part to living in a happy and healthy way, for me it is not a luxurious practice to partake in now and again, meditation is as essential as any other self care task such as brushing my teeth. I am passionate about how meditation can quickly transform your life, help you calm an anxious or over active mind, help you soothe and repair an exhausted body and help you connect with the deepest part of your soul. This is why, no matter what course I teach, there is always meditation within it.
Meditation has without doubt transformed me and will transform anyone who makes a commitment to practicing it (because it is always a practice!). Here are the top ways meditation changed my life.
When I think back on how I used to be, I was constantly stressed and anxious. I regularly woke with a sense of dread even though I could not explain what I had to feel fearful about. Ever since I could remember, I was a worrier, I had watched my parents and grandparents worry and had learned that this was how it was. You know the sort, the person who worries even more when there is nothing to worry about!
Meditation has not stopped me having challenges and difficulties to face but I no longer worry about what may or may not happen. I have surrendered to living in the moment as much as I can which has resulted in me letting go of things I cannot control. When you meditate regularly, you gain a deep sense of inner peace, a feeling that everything is happening in exactly the way it is meant to happen, when you believe this, then what is there to worry about?
2. I became physically healthy
As a child I had regularly suffered with minor illnesses, regular colds, viruses, water infections, vertigo and more. When you meditate, you allow your body the opportunity to be still and in that stillness deep healing can occur. You also learn to listen to your body much more, our body is giving us signs and signals all the time but we are often so busy doing things that we ignore them until they become so loud we cannot ignore them any longer. When you meditate, you learn to scan your body for tension, stress, any areas that feel out of balance, therefore dealing with most issues long before they manifest into a illness.
3. I can ‘see’ clearer
No, my physical eyesight has not improved but meditation allows you to gain a great sense of perspective. You learn to be able to calm all of that mind chatter which distracts you when you are faced with a challenge. Being able to gain clarity over your concerns is a wonderful gift, you will find yourself seeking the advice of others far less as you will know that when you meditate you can communicate with your higher self and have a knowing of what direction you should go.
Before meditating regularly, I never believed that ‘people like me’ did such a thing. How wrong I was! The number of people I meet who meditate is incredible, so much so you almost learn to spot them, they are calmer, quieter and smile from the inside.
Without doubt, meditation has changed every single aspect of my life for the better and has given me a tool to use whenever I feel out of sorts whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. I encourage every client I meet to take a few minutes every day to simply focus upon their breathing as a way of beginning a meditation practice and the changes they notice are equally as amazing. It’s also why I wrote the 28 Days to Beam – Meditation Programme. The course guides students through a simple meditation every day for a month, no meditation is longer than 15 minutes, so they fit in easily with your life (many people like to do them before bed and notice a huge improvement in their sleeping patterns).
